DuPage Mayors and Managers Conference President's Message

Message from the DuPage Mayors and Managers Conference President's Message -- You will recall that one of our key legislative priorities during 2017 was defending against the state’s attempts to impose a permanent freeze on our local property taxes.

It has been challenging to rebut the soundbites and superficial statements but a permanent property tax freeze has significant consequences. It takes time to convey the negative impact it can have on our ability as municipal governments to provide essential services to our residents. In addition, a property tax freeze doesn’t guarantee any actual savings for individual homeowners.

Still, our job is to give our residents the opportunity to fully understand this and other complex issues that will impact their daily lives.

Over the summer months, DMMC began preparing, and our Board of Directors has overseen, efforts culminating in the launch of Issues at Hand, a local public affairs program that goes beyond soundbites to address and explain important topics confronting local governments and impacting our residents. Airing quarterly, the show features a rotating panel of mayors discussing a variety of issues.

We’ve just released our first episode, which examines how property taxes contribute to local governments and schools and the negative impact a permanent property tax freeze could have on our communities.

As our panelists – which include myself, Mayors Steve Chirico of Naperville and David Brummel of Warrenville – conclude, a property tax freeze would have broad negative implications for our residents.

The General Assembly will begin its 2018 session at the end of this month, and once again we will be tasked with defending against proposals to freeze local property taxes. Now is the time to be sure our residents accurately understand the issue and our legislators know all the facts as they both deliberate on legislation and prepare their campaign platforms.
